The course consists of four parts over a minimum of three years - phase one: pre-sea marine engineering, engineering practice, and safety training; phase two: guided at-sea study programs; phase three: watch keeper education and training and phase four: second and chief engineer education and training. Australia has the reputation of producing some of the finest officers in the world. All programs are internationally approved by Australian Maritime Safety Authority, internationally accredited by IMarEST and meet the requirements of the STCW95 convention.

Students should have completed a Year 10 English, Year 12 Maths or Science, or equivalent. International students whose native is not English should have the following English qualifications: IELTS (Academic) - 6.0 (no individual band less than 5.5); TOEFL (PBT) 550 TWE 4.5; TOEFL (IBT) 80 (no score below 20) and PTE Academic 50 with no score lower than 42.

This campus in Launceston is situated on 50 hectares at Newnham on the banks of the Tamar River and is only ten minutes from the CBD. The campus offers a range of state-of-the-art facilities including a nursing simulation centre and a Human Interface Technology Laboratory (HIT Lab AU). The Australian Maritime College, an institute of UTAS, is also located at Newnham and is Australia’s best-equipped maritime education, training and research institute with facilities including training vessels, an integrated marine simulator, towing tank, fire fighting and emergency response centre, a flume tank, a cavitation tunnel, and a model testing basin. Closer to the city centre in Launceston at Inveresk are the School of Visual and Performing Arts, and the School of Architecture and Design, both housed in award-winning refurbished railway workshops. With close proximity to the Queen Victoria Museum and Art Gallery, the Inveresk site is notable as an inner-city cultural precinct providing a focus for theatre, visual arts and design.
