This course will provide students with a broad background in basic sciences. Applied Science is the science of applying knowledge from one or more natural scientific fields to practical problems. Equine Science is a specialised area of animal science which involves horses to study areas such as nutrition, reproduction, exercise physiology, health and rehabilitation as well as welfare and behaviour. This knowledge is then applied to improve the management, performance and welfare of both the leisure horse and the equine athlete. Equine Science also includes areas of study which explore the interaction of horse and rider. Graduates have established careers in Australia, Germany, Britain, the United States of America and New Zealand at every level of the horse industry. With experience, many progress to supervisory and management positions. Areas of employment include: horse studs, agistment, preconditioning and training establishments, racing and competition stables, statutory bodies administering racing and trotting, bloodstock agencies, agribusiness firms servicing the horse industry, breed societies, pastoral enterprises, equestrian centres and riding schools, sales and marketing, animal nutrition and animal health companies, equine journalism, veterinary assistants, equine industry organisations and educational institutions.

Students must have completed the following prerequisites: Food Science and Nutrition: Year 12 English, Chemistry and Mathematics B;
Other majors: Year 12 English. They should satisfy the English language requirements: IELTS (overall score of 6.5; writing score of 6); TOEFL - (Computer based score of 237; Essay writing score of 4.5); TOEFL - (Paper based score of 570; TWE (Test of written English) score of 5); TOEFL - (Internet Based (iBT) overall score of 90; writing score of 21).

This University was established by an Act of State Parliament on December 10, 1909 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Queensland’s separation from the colony of New South Wales. Its foundation four months later made it the first university in the State and the fifth in the nation. This St Lucia campus is considered by many to be Australia's most attractive. Located seven kilometres from the city's heart on a magnificent 114-hectare site in a bend of the Brisbane River, the campus has expansive landscaped grounds and many playing fields. Its hub is a semi-circle of cloistered buildings enclosing the Great Court, which is on the Queensland Heritage Register as well as the Register of the National Trust of Queensland. The Alumni Teaching Garden in College Road near the river is primarily a teaching and research facility but also includes a quiet area of lush rainforest with public walkways. The adjacent Una Prentice Memorial Garden, bounded by Roberston Walk and Ferry Walk, surrounds two of the three lakes on campus.

This college provide students with individual study bedrooms containing a single bed, desk, chair and storage space for clothing and other belongings. Some College rooms have attached bathrooms (ensuites), but the more usual arrangement is to share the bathroom with other students. Colleges provide educational amenities such as group study rooms, computer labs, printers and photocopiers and tutorials that are in addition to the standard university classes; and recreational facilities such as common rooms, landscaped gardens, gymnasiums, practice courts and music rooms. There are 10 Residential Colleges based on the grounds of the St Lucia campus within easy walking distance of all teaching and research facilities, but they are not owned or managed by the University.

This campus is internationally recognised as Australia's leading education and research provider in the field of Animals, Agriculture, Veterinary Science, Food and the Environment. It combines the rural traditions of its century-old origins as the Queensland Agricultural College with state-of-the-art research and teaching facilities in agriculture, animals, veterinary science and the environment. There are a number of nursery and glasshouse facilities which are used to support the plant breeding activities of the Centre for Native Floriculture which conducts research and industry development to strengthen the business of native floriculture in Australia and internationally. A lysimeter which is used for measuring the uptake of water by plants is currently under construction which will allow for further innovative research to be undertaken on drought adaptation of plants.

Gatton has accommodation on campus for approximately 430 students in three Halls of Residence. Each student is provided with an individual bed/study room and a range of academic and social support services: academic tutorials, social, sporting and recreational activities and pastoral care.
