This program in economics provides training in theoretical and applied aspects of modern economics, econometrics, and financial economics. It is one of the most successful programs of its type in Australia and a leading supplier of graduates to the private and public sectors. Although primarily interested in explaining the behaviour of individuals, economics also addresses the collective behaviour of businesses and industries, governments and countries, and the globe as a whole. As such, economics is crucial to understanding and solving the major problems and challenges facing the world today, such as global warming, poverty, development, and recession. Economics is also important for business and how they interact in the marketplace. The Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences offers a range of subject areas that prepare graduates for careers in administration, education, business research, marketing, media, management consultancy, public relations, gallery and museum curatorship, hospitality and tourism, community and welfare. Graduates are proficient in research and inquiry, and demonstrate personal and intellectual autonomy, and ethical, social and professional understanding, qualities sought after by leading employers all over the world.

Students must have an acceptable secondary qualification from their high school studies (or at least one year of tertiary studies). They must satisfy IELTS score of 6.5 (min 6.0 in each band) or TOEFL minimum result of 577 overall including a minimum result of 4.5 in writing or IBT score of 90 overall including a minimum result of 22 in reading, listening and speaking and 23 in writing).
