This program is designed for those who wish to develop a thorough knowledge of languages and their structures and the social and cultural aspects of the countries from which the language comes. There are three ways to complete the degree: an extensive major in one language consisting of all major study requirements plus further units providing social and cultural insights into the countries where the language is spoken; a minor in linguistics; and a minor in a second language, or in European or Asian studies; majors in two languages and a minor in linguistics; a major in a language, a major in linguistics and a minor in a second language, or in European or Asian studies. The university offers Chinese, French, German, Hebrew, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Spanish and Ukrainian.

Students must have academic Year 12, International Baccalaureate or equivalent academic qualification. VCE prerequisites include units 3 and 4 - a study score of at least 30 in English (ESL) or 25 in any other English, and a study score of at least 20 in a LOTE (any). International Baccalaureate subject prerequisites include a score of at least 4 in English SL or 3 in English HL or 5 in English B SL or 4 in English B HL and a score of at least 3 in a language other than English (LOTE) at SL or HL. They must have achieved the following English language proficiency test results: IELTS (minimum test score of 6.5 overall; no individual band less than 6.0); Paper-based TOEFL (minimum test score of 580; a Test of Written English (TWE) score of at least 4.5); Internet-based TOEFL (a score of at least 90 overall; a Writing score of at least 22; no score lower than 20 on the other sections of the test); Cambridge English CAE (A grade); Cambridge English CEP (C grade).
