This course allows students to match their academic interests with their career goals. It provides a set of general, portable and lasting skills vital to any career, such as the ability to research an issue, present an argument, analyse information, communicate clearly and relate well to people. This major provides the techniques and principles to be adopted in the analysis and description of any given language. Linguistic study of language and language use in socio-cultural contexts contributes to our understanding of identities, social and cultural organisation, multiculturalism/multilingualism, institutions and the manipulation of power, as well as the creative functions of language in texts and discourses.

Students must have academic Year 12, International Baccalaureate or equivalent academic qualification. VCE prerequisites include Units 3 and 4 - a study score of at least 30 in English (ESL) or 25 in any other English. International Baccalaureate subject prerequisites include a score of at least 4 in English SL or 3 in English HL or 5 in English B SL or 4 in English B HL. They must have achieved the following English language proficiency test results: IELTS (minimum test score of 6.5 overall; no individual band less than 6.0); Paper-based TOEFL (minimum test score of 580; a Test of Written English (TWE) score of at least 4.5); Internet-based TOEFL (a score of at least 90 overall; a Writing score of at least 22; no score lower than 20 on the other sections of the test); Cambridge English CAE (A grade); Cambridge English CEP (C grade).
