This course focuses on the dynamics of workplace relations between employers and employees as well as the wider impact of employment relations on the economy, society and politics. Students will study how work is organized, the way employees are managed, the role of unions, how co-operation and negotiation can be developed, and how conflict can emerge and be managed. The nature of employment relations in both Australia and other countries is examined using institutional and sociological perspectives. This major is taught through a combination of lectures, tutorials, workshops, and other in-class activities. At the UWA Business School, they get to study work and employment relations with renowned lecturers and professors who are at the leading edge of research and practice in Australia and internationally, ensuring that the knowledge they develop through this course will set students apart as a graduate in this field. It is beneficial for those aspiring to work in a management position in the private or government sector, for a union, or for those wishing to become involved in industrial law. Students can pursue further studies at honors level or undertake a specialist master’s degree such as the Master of Human Resources and Employment Relations. Students can also choose to complete a generalist master’s degree.

Students must have completed Western Australian Universities Preparatory Program (WAUPP) with a score of 63, International Baccalaureate with a score of 29, French Baccalaureate with a score of 12, UWA Foundation Program (UWAFP) with a score of 66, GCE or Cambridge Advanced-level Examinations with a score of 8. To be eligible for admission to a program at UWA, they must demonstrate satisfactory performance in a UWA-approved test of English. This is the case even if English is their first language. They must also have WA Certificate of Education in English, Literature or English as an additional language/dialect with scaled mark of 50 or above, in stage 2 or stage 3. TEE English/English Literature with scaled mark of 50 or above English as a Second Language with final mark of 66.60 or above (in 2007). There are different English language requirement for various states.
