The Bachelor of Biodiversity and Conservation degree is designed to provide students with a broad background in the sciences underpinning research in conservation biology and related areas. It offers a broad and flexible program with a strong focus on students acquiring research skills, then applying these skills in environmental management and wildlife conservation. Whilst a number of universities now offer environmental science degrees, Macquarie University is the only university in NSW that offers a degree specialising in conservation biology. The degree has a strong research focus, and all units contain significant proportions of research material in the form of case studies, or reference to the teacher’s own research. Students have the flexibility to construct a specific program of study tailored to their intended professional careers. The degree offers a unique combination of subjects that combine basic biological knowledge with environmental and conservation management issues. This includes: Ecology – the study of plants, animals and micro-organisms in relation to each other and their environment; Biodiversity – the study of biological variety and how this variety can be understood and classified; Conservation biology – the study of how biological diversity can be conserved for the future and is a subject that draws together basic biological and ecological principles with those of genetics, taxonomy and evolutionary biology. This study program provides flexibility by allowing they to combine ecology with specialised subjects on topics such as environmental sciences, conservation and biodiversity, natural sciences and the marine environment. This course is suitable for the students interested in environmental issues and how organisms in the environment interact. Students should have Prior knowledge of Maths and Chemistry or equivalent. Students should have IELTS (Academic English only): Minimum score of 6.5 overall, with 6.0 in each section; TOEFL (paper based test): Minimum score of 570 overall, with 53 Listening, 52 Reading, 59 Structure/ Written Expression, 4.5 TWE; TOEFL (internet based test): Minimum score of 90 overall, with 20 Listening, 20 Reading, 22 Writing, 20 Speaking.
