This program focuses on the sustainable design of buildings, urban systems, public places, transport nodes, and recreation and conservation areas. There is an emphasis on design for tropical/subtropical climates, relevant to the local region as well as to South East Asia, and on design that embodies the principles of sustainability. Students will learn to think and write critically and analytically and to apply this knowledge in achieving social equity, economic viability and environmental responsibility in their design solutions. These design solutions will be concerned equally with aesthetic quality, functional appropriateness and the needs of users now and in the future. This program combines academic studies and field work with an emphasis on studio learning and practical sustainable outcomes. As part of their third year they will undertake a supervised off-campus industry based design project.

Students should have completed a senior secondary school qualification regarded as comparable to an Australian Year 12 award. International students whose native is not English should have the following requirements: a minimum overall band score of 6.0 on IELTS (Academic) with no sub-score of less than 5.5; a minimum score of 550 on TOEFL; an internet-based (iBT) TOEFL score of 79 (no score less than 19); no score less than three in each skill of the ISLPR (conducted by GELI or ISLPR Language Services only); a minimum grade of C on the Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English (CAE); a minimum grade of C on the Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE).
