The course allows students to concentrate on developing a body of work of a speculative and individual nature. The emphasis is placed on a spirit of excellence and a strong sense of independent enquiry. Experimentation is encouraged and the candidate should have a firm commitment to the articulation of visual art theory in written, verbal and visual form, and its integration into art practice. It is designed to prepare students for research training at postgraduate level, and to develop their respective practices as artists, designers or writers. Graduates from the Bachelor of Fine Arts with Honors find employment in a variety of positions within the arts professions, including studio practice, theoretical writing on art, curatorial work, gallery administration, research and teaching as well as participating in individual and group-generated projects.

Students should have completed a BFA degree or equivalent; they should have completed 4 x 12.5 per cent Art and Design Theory units in the BFA with a Distinction average unless there are exceptional circumstances. For entry into the Studio stream, students are required to have gained a Distinction average in their studio major throughout their undergraduate degree (a studio major in the BFA consists of 1 x 12.5 per cent unit at first year, one Core Studies unit, 2 x 12.5 per cent up to 2 x 25 per cent units at second year, and 2 x 25 per cent units at third year level). For entry into the Art and Design Theory stream, students are required to have gained at least a Distinction average in 6 x 12.5 per cent units in the major, four of which must be in the final (third) year (a major in Art and Design Theory consists of 2 x 12.5 per cent units at first year, 2 x 12.5 per cent units at second year and 4 x 12.5 per cent units at third year level). International students whose native is not English should have the following English qualifications: IELTS (Academic) - 6.0 (no individual band less than 5.5); TOEFL (PBT) 550 TWE 4.5; TOEFL (IBT) 80 (no score below 20) and PTE Academic 50 with no score lower than 42.
