This course focuses on the application of computer and computer-based systems to meet information needs. It aims to give students the opportunity to explore all aspects of IT and its uses, and to graduate with knowledge and skills in a variety of key areas of IT and computer-based systems. The degree offers units across the complete spectrum of IT, ranging from non-technical areas such as the nature of information and organisational needs for IT, through the hardware, software, network and multimedia technologies which are used to satisfy these needs, to the development and management skills needed to create and implement computer-based systems. The degree structure provides the greatest possible flexibility, and gives students the broadest possible range of options from which to choose their units of study. This enables students to tailor their studies to suit their individual needs, aptitudes and interests. They may opt for breadth in their studies by taking units across a wide range of aspects of IT, or they may decide to focus their studies by completing one or two majors which suit their interests and skills. Students can change their choice of major during their degree and move between a major and the general version (no major) as they wish. Majors offered include Applications development, Applications development and networks, Business systems, Enterprise information management, Games development, Information and communications technology and Multimedia development. Graduates from the course will have the knowledge and skills needed to use IT effectively and to use, develop and manage IT-based systems. The breadth and strong practical emphasis of the course will prepare graduates for careers working with information and IT in a wide range of positions in business, government and industry. Graduates enter a variety of roles such as: Specialist programmer, Systems analyst, Business analyst, Database administrator, Games developer, Multimedia developer and IT Consultant. Students must have English (Year 12), any mathematics (Australian equivalent Year 11) qualification. VCE prerequisites include units 1 and 2 - two units (any study combination) from general mathematics or mathematical methods (either) or units 3 and 4 - mathematics (any). Units 3 and 4 - a study score of at least 30 in English (ESL) or 25 in any other English. International Baccalaureate subject prerequisites include a score of at least 4 in English SL or 3 in English HL or 5 in English B SL or 4 in English B HL and a score of at least 3 in any mathematics subject. They must have achieved the following English language proficiency test results: IELTS (minimum test score of 6.5 overall; no individual band less than 6.0); Paper-based TOEFL (minimum test score of 580; a Test of Written English (TWE) score of at least 4.5); Internet-based TOEFL (a score of at least 90 overall; a Writing score of at least 22; no score lower than 20 on the other sections of the test); Cambridge English CAE (A grade); Cambridge English CEP (C grade).
