The course is for students with a high level of achievement in undergraduate international studies. It combines further advanced-level coursework with a substantial research project. Students completing the course at a high level of achievement will be qualified to undertake higher degree research.

Students admission to the final honors course should have satisfied all requirements for admission to the degree of Bachelor of International Studies or Bachelor of International Studies (Advanced) in The University of New England or equivalent; and passed units to the value of at least 48 credit points in the major in which the candidate wishes to proceed, except that with the approval of the Course Coordinator, up to 12 credit points of other units may be substituted; and attained at least Distinction standard in 18 credit points at 300 level in the major in which the candidate wishes to proceed; and have fulfilled the requirements for a degree or other qualification of equivalent standing of a university or other institution recognized by the faculty for this purpose. International students must meet at least one of the following criteria in English language requirements: English is the applicant's first language; satisfactory completion, within 5 years of the date of application for admission to UNE; a pass grade or better in an English language subject at Australian Year 12 level or overseas equivalent; or an IELTS (Academic) overall score of at least 6.0 with no sub-band score less than 5.5 (or equivalent TOEFL score of at least 213 in the Computer-Based Test; or at least 79 in the Internet-Based Test with no less than 22 in the written component); satisfactory completion of the English for Academic Purposes (EAP) program at the University of New England English Language Centre, or an equivalent EAP program at an Australian University NEAS-accredited English Language Centre (subject to certification from the university concerned that satisfactory completion of that university's EAP program would entitle the applicant to be accepted into a comparable award-bearing program at that university; or at a non University NEAS-accredited English Language Provider recognized by the Academic Board Teaching and Learning Committee; or satisfactory completion on a prior or concurrent basis of an English communication skills program appropriate for specific programs approved by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor or their nominee, on the joint advice of the relevant Pro Vice-Chancellor-Dean and Director, English Language and International Services.
