The main aim of this combined program is to prepare sonography professionals to serve in the hospitals, clinics and community health care services of Queensland and Australia; educate sonography professionals to contribute to caring and cost effective health care, to initiate improvements and collaborate in inter-disciplinary teams; challenge and equip students to be critical and independent learners, experienced in evidence-based practice and collaborative problem solving in inter-cultural health care; educate students to critically evaluate and apply research as they create a stimulating and supportive professional environment; provide an intellectually challenging education in sonography to enable graduates to make a positive contribution to health and social fabric of Australian society; provide a rigorous intellectual climate that encourages the promotion and use of advanced imaging technologies, assisting in the remediation of disease; enable sonographers to make a lifetime contribution to knowledge and understanding in medical imaging in national and international settings; create a centre of excellence in teaching and learning, scholarship and community service in health sciences and imaging in Central Queensland and beyond; create lifelong learners who will be prepared for the multiple imaging modalities present now and in the future through an innovative curriculum and post graduate opportunities. Medical Sonographer (or Ultrasonographer) is a health professional who uses ultrasonic equipment to produce diagnostic images, scans, videos, or 3D or 4D volumes of anatomy and diagnostic data. Sonographer requires specialised education and skills to view, analyse and modify the scan to optimise the information captured on the image. They have an important degree of responsibility in the diagnostic process because of the high levels of decisional latitude and diagnostic input. Communication skills, exemplary professional attitudes and care for the physical and psycho social well being of the patient are all critical to success in this field. Sonographers are in demand in many public and private health facilities. An expanding and ageing population will ensure the demand will remain for the foreseeable future.

Students should have sound or satisfactory achievement in three academic subjects in Year 12 or equivalent. They should also have an overall IELTS band score of 6.0 (with no individual band score of less than 5.0), or a TOEFL score of 550 (Internet-based score of 79 or computer-based score of 213), including a TWE of 4.
