This program is a three year initial theological degree for students wishing to study theology at a tertiary level. It is also part of the normal requirements for candidates wishing to prepare for ordination in the Lutheran Church of Australia. It provides units designed to prepare women and men for various areas of ministry in the church and society. A feature of the course is the supervised field experience which provides a close link between units taught and experiences in the field. This field education may be general in nature [vicarage in a congregation] or related to a specific area of ministry. The structure of the BMin offers considerable flexibility for students to follow areas of interest and specialisation. The BMin is recognised by other denominations as an appropriate initial qualification for individuals preparing for ministry in those denominations. The BMin is also a primary degree for those wishing to proceed to the postgraduate studies of the Master of Ministry or Doctor of Ministry. The BMin enables students to: acquire a broad, integrated introduction to theology in general, and Lutheran theology in particular, and to become familiar with the literature, language and concepts of theology; develop the academic skills and attributes necessary to research, comprehend, interpret and evaluate theology from a range of sources and to apply that theology to the issues and challenges of church and society; develop the ability to review, consolidate, extend and apply the knowledge and techniques learnt to the practice of ministry, also through an extended period of supervised field experience; develop a foundation in theology for self-directed and lifelong learning and the basis for advanced study in theology through graduate courses; develop interpersonal and teamwork skills appropriate for ministry in the church and for further study.

Students should have completed secondary education to a standard required for admission to university studies or on the basis of appropriate special entry: via the Special Tertiary Admissions Test [STAT] test or equivalent. In addition, they should have obtained an average score across all bands of 6.5 with no band under 6.0 of the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) and TOEFL score equivalent is at least 580 (TWE above 4.5).
