This course prepares graduates to work as professional nutritionists and dietitians in a range of settings. It includes a significant science component. In the first two years, this includes topics in the biological sciences, chemistry and human physiology. During their final year, students will undertake 21 weeks of work placement, in clinical, community and food service settings. If students are not accepted into this course in first year they may wish to consider enrolling in either the Bachelor of Medical Science, the Bachelor of Science or the Bachelor of Health Sciences (Nutrition stream) to obtain the required prerequisites to apply for lateral transfer into the Bachelor of Nutrition and Dietetics at the end of the second year. Year three entry is also very competitive due to the limited number of places available in the course. This course aims to educate professionals who are able to apply scientific principles and integrate knowledge and skills of nutrition, dietetics and other human sciences in order to promote health and prevent illness in communities and individuals. The first two years of the course introduce students to the behavioural and biosciences which they will progressively apply to the study of food and nutritional sciences, including the study of social and ecological issues in relation to food. In the final two years there is increasing exposure to professional nutrition and dietetic practice, including at least 21 weeks of supervised placement. It prepares graduates for employment in a wide variety of settings including: patient care and education in hospitals, food service, nutrition and health education in community health services, public health nutrition, food and nutrition policy, private practice and consultancy, education and training, food industry, health promotion and nutrition research. This course is founded on teaching and learning practices designed to encourage life-long learning in the practice of nutrition and dietetics.

Students can qualify for undergraduate courses through: year 12 qualifications; adult entry (STAT); TAFE/VET qualifications; and higher education transfers. Some places are available to students who have completed at least two years of an approved degree with a GPA normally of at least a credit average, and which is inclusive of studies in biochemistry and physiology to at least second year. These students are granted two years of credit and begin the program of study at third year. Applicants applying for third year entry must submit with their application a statement outlining their interest in the course and profession, and evidence of any relevant employment experience. Applicants will be ranked for admission on the basis of a selection score which is a combination of academic merit (70 per cent) and assessment of their statement of interest and experience (30 per cent). They should have IELTS (Academic) score of 6.5 (6.0 in all sub bands); TOEFL (paper) score of 580 (TWE 4.5); TOEFL (internet) score of 90 (20 in writing, speaking, reading, listening); Cambridge (CAE) Grade of B or higher; Cambridge (CPE) Grade of C or higher.
