This course aims to understand all aspects of planet, ranging from the Earth's surface to the deep interior. It also aims to discover how the Earth has evolved during the past 4.4 billion years, including the origin of continents, oceans, atmosphere and life. Applying knowledge of Earth processes and time scales is fundamental to locating resources such as groundwater, petroleum and minerals, and understanding climate and other environmental changes. Most of Australia's mineral and petroleum resources are in Western Australia, so UWA is well placed for students to gain geological skills. Employment opportunities are plentiful in the resources industries (minerals, geothermal, and groundwater) or research fields such as planetary geology, volcano or earthquake hazard prediction. Additional employment opportunities exist in government agencies dealing with resources or environmental companies and agencies. Students with Geology major can pursue further studies at Honors level and/or at Masters Level. A master's can be studied either by coursework (for example, Ore Deposit Geology or Hydro-geology) or by research (thesis and coursework, for example, Geo-sciences, Hydro-geology, or Mineral Geo-sciences).

Students must have completed Western Australian Universities Preparatory Program (WAUPP) with a score of 63, International Baccalaureate with a score of 29, French Baccalaureate with a score of 12, UWA Foundation Program (UWAFP) with a score of 66, GCE or Cambridge Advanced-level Examinations with a score of 8. To be eligible for admission to a program at UWA, they must demonstrate satisfactory performance in a UWA-approved test of English. This is the case even if English is their first language. They must also have WA Certificate of Education in English, Literature or English as an additional language/dialect with scaled mark of 50 or above, in stage 2 or stage 3. TEE English/English Literature with scaled mark of 50 or above English as a Second Language with final mark of 66.60 or above (in 2007). There are different English language requirement for various states.
