The honours program allows flexibility for students to undertake research in institutions affiliated with the School of Medicine or Flinders Medical Centre. These institutions include CSIRO, Child Health Research Institute, Repatriation General Hospital, Flinders Rural Clinical School, NT Clinical School or placements with local and State Governments. Both BSc and BHlthSc Honours are offered on a one year full time basis or a two year part time basis. The part time option must be taken over two consecutive years. Both the full and part time options can begin in either semester one or semester two (mid-year intake). This program is designed to provide an excellent opportunity for students to experience scientific endeavour and to furnish a sound basis for their future development. The objectives of the honours year are: to allow more capable students to extend their undergraduate career by demonstrating their ability to work in a research environment. In particular, the honours year provides experience in qualitative studies, experimental design, critical analysis of information, data management, and theory generation. For life science students it may involve experience with advanced analytical techniques using state-of-the-art equipment. Hence, an Honours degree confers a major advantage in the professional market-place; to provide experience in applying basic knowledge to specific problems and hence to prepare students for a career in research and development; to provide a pathway for the more able undergraduates to pursue postgraduate study; and where appropriate to provide advanced clinical experience in a research setting thus enhancing the clinical acumen and encouraging professional development.

Students can qualify for undergraduate courses through: year 12 qualifications; adult entry (STAT); TAFE/VET qualifications; and higher education transfers. They should have IELTS (academic) score of 6.0 (6.0 in speaking and writing); TOEFL (paper) score of 550 (TWE 4.5); TOEFL (internet) score of 80 (20 in writing and speaking); Cambridge (CAE) Grade of B or higher; Cambridge (CPE) Grade of C or higher; Pearson English Test overall score of 59 with no communication score less than 53.
