This program makes students to become highly proficient in all core areas of social work, and develop critical thinking skills grounded in the values and ethics of the profession - promoting social justice, diversity, equity, and a commitment to the rights and needs of the people with whom they work. For those students undertaking this program as an accelerated program, they will undertake an intensive mode course in summer semester prior to commencing a 17-week field placement in semester one, thus providing a foundation level of knowledge and skill. As well as core courses in human services provision, specialized social work courses, and some electives, they will study society and social arrangements, social welfare systems, and human behavior and development. Field education is an important component of the social work program, giving them the opportunity to integrate academic knowledge and skills with practical experience in group work, interpersonal helping, community work, social action, assessment and casework, research and evaluation, social policy analysis and administration. This is an accelerated program. It prepares them for a wide range of social work roles including working with individuals, groups and families; community work; advocacy, research, planning and policy development; and management and administration. They could also work in child protection, youth work, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander services, child and family welfare, youth and adult offending, hospital and community health settings, employment and income support and aged care.

Students should have completed at least the equivalent of two full-time years of study in social and behavioral sciences such as psychology, human development, education, nursing, sociology, social policy, government, economics, Australian history and society, or criminology at a recognized Australian University. International students whose native is not English should have the following requirements: a minimum overall band score of 6.0 on IELTS (Academic) with no sub-score of less than 5.5; a minimum score of 550 on TOEFL; an internet-based (iBT) TOEFL score of 79 (no score less than 19); no score less than three in each skill of the ISLPR (conducted by GELI or ISLPR Language Services only); a minimum grade of C on the Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English (CAE); a minimum grade of C on the Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE).
