This double degree is well suited to students who want to develop their artistic skills in one or more visual media, who are looking towards a career in the creative and visual arts, or who want to share their passion and creativity with others by taking up a career in visual arts education. Students will complete a major (eight units) and a minor (four units) sequence in visual arts, combined with their studies in secondary education. Visual arts studies can be taken in painting, sculpture, printmedia, photomedia and theory of art and design. Students will develop their skills and creativity as they progress through the program, learning from active practitioners in visual art. The education studies provide students with a comprehensive knowledge of the theoretical foundations of education, curriculum studies and practical teaching experience. Secondary education studies include adolescent learning, curriculum development, assessment, language and literacy and curriculum specialism units based on their studies in visual arts, which can give them a double curriculum teaching specialism in visual arts. Students will gain an understanding of the nature of education, classroom teaching and practice in schools, and the relationship between education and society. Students undertake a minimum of 80 days of supervised teaching placement in schools or other appropriate settings, which may include some overseas locations. By the end of the professional placements, students will be experienced teaching in front of a class and ready to start their teaching career. Following registration with the VIT, graduates will be qualified to teach in Victorian secondary schools and related teaching services. Graduates of the secondary education degree will be specifically qualified to teach in two specialist secondary subject areas related to their Visual Arts studies. Graduates wishing to teach interstate or overseas are advised to check registration requirements with local authorities.

Applicants must have completed equivalent to Australian Year 12. They must also have completed the following prerequisite: VCE prerequisites - units 1 and 2-two units (any study combination) of general mathematics or mathematical methods (CAS) or Units 3 and 4-mathematics (any). Units 3 and 4-a study score of at least 30 in English (ESL) or 25 in any other English, and a study score of at least 30 in one of art or studio arts. International Baccalaureate subject prerequisites: a score of at least 4 in English SL or 3 in English HL or 5 in English B SL or 4 in English B HL, and a score of at least 5 in visual arts SL or 4 in visual arts HL, and a score of at least 3 in any mathematics subject. Also they should demonstrate their English language proficiency with a minimum overall IELTS test score of at least 6.5 with individual band scores required at 6.5 for Reading, 6.5 for Listening, 6.0 for Writing and 6.0 for Speaking. In the internet-based TOEFL, an overall score of at least 90 with at least 22 in the written section and at least 20 in the speaking, reading and listening sections.
