This qualification provides introductory training in quality care of older persons in a registered aged care facility or in the community. It provides skills and knowledge to work primarily in residential facilities under direct or regular supervision within clearly defined organisational guidelines and service plans. They can carry out activities related to the maintenance of an individual's personal care and / or other activities of living, as a residential aged care assistant, community care assistant, personal care worker or in respite centres.

Students must have English proficiency with IELTS score of 5.5 (with no individual band less than 5.0). They must also have anyone of the following requirements: completion of year 10 or equivalent with a sound achievement in English and mathematics; non school leavers are selected according to eligibility and merit, vocational experience, previous study and personal competencies; successful completion of an Australian qualifications framework certificate III or higher in any area of study requiring formal written communication and numeracy skills.
