This course is an embedded exit point at the first year of the Diploma of Photoimaging. This course provides practical training for individuals who wish to pursue a career in professional photography. Students gain practical experience in the many photographic imaging techniques and practices (both analogue and digital). Emphasis on industry involvement and extracurricular projects with industry specialists provides students with the best opportunities for success. This course is recognized by various government departments and photographic businesses as an approved course of study. In some cases the award is a requirement for graded positions. The course is also recognized by the Australian Institute of Professional Photography, and graduates may be granted membership to this organization. Students experience a black and white wet darkroom as part of the program. Successful students may continue on to further studies to complete a degree in their specialist field. The knowledge and experience gained gives opportunities to be either self employed freelance or employed as photographic assistants/technicians or paraprofessionals in commercial, advertising, fashion, food, wedding, portrait, digital imaging, editorial and press, sports, travel, stock library, illustrative, professional laboratory and scientific and technical photography. Opportunities exist both within the private sector and various government departments.

Students must have completed an Australian Year 12 (or recognized equivalent) or relevant work experience. IELTS 5.5 or higher (or recognized equivalents) is required. Mature Age students are encouraged to apply. Applicants in Australia are required to attend an interview and present a folio. Applicants applying from overseas are required to present a folio.
