This course offers students the opportunity to complete a Diploma in Language at the same time they are taking pretty well any other degree at Flinders - from Science or Psychology to Law or Business. By adding one extra year to their normal study program for the degree, they will graduate with two qualifications. Students can undertake the Diploma in Language if they have been admitted to any undergraduate degree of the University. The Diploma in Language aims to: foster the development of proficient levels of linguistic, socio-cultural and communicative competencies in French, Indonesian, Italian, Modern Greek or Spanish; expose students to a wide body of specific and cross-disciplinary knowledge relative to linguistic and cultural knowledges and practices (grammar, literature, translation, cinema, etc) relative to the language of study; develop students ability to analyse and respond to written and visual texts of varying difficulty relative to the language of study. French is spoken in more than 40 countries, including some of Australia's closest neighbours, and is one of the most widely taught second languages in the world. It is also: a major commercial and scientific language in a united Europe; a language of diplomacy and an official working language of major international organizations; the second most widespread and well-distributed language of the media. French is also a stepping-stone to the easy learning of other Romance languages, such as Italian, Spanish and Portuguese. The study of French (and more generally, the study of languages) helps students develop a range of communicative, organisational, critical and creative transferable skills, as well as fostering cross-cultural understanding.

Students can undertake the Diploma in Language if they have been admitted to any undergraduate degree of the University. The Diploma of Language is only available in combination with another undergraduate course. They should have IELTS (academic) score of 6.0 (6.0 in speaking and writing); TOEFL (paper) score of 550 (TWE 4.5); TOEFL (internet) score of 80 (20 in writing and speaking); Cambridge (CAE) Grade of B or higher; Cambridge (CPE) Grade of C or higher; Pearson English Test overall score of 59 with no communication score less than 53.
