This course is for people who want to work as an independent trainer for a thoroughbred racing stable and who operates an independent business with responsibilities for quality outputs, supervision of staff, coordinating groups, planning and developing strategic initiatives, and operating in a wide variety of contexts, most of which are complex and non-routine. Students will need a thorough knowledge of the rules of racing and business practices as an essential requirement. They will be required to evaluate information for planning and research purposes and apply theoretical concepts to a range of situations. The supply of livestock is an essential part of the racing industry and students would be required to act for owners in advising on the purchase of livestock. This involves knowledge of pedigree, conformation and animal physiology as well as the rules relating to partnerships and syndication. Career opportunities include independent trainer in a thoroughbred racing stable. Students would train for outside owners, would generally have a large training establishment, employ several or many staff, often operate interstate and internationally and have extensive demands from owners, media and public.

Students must have Year 10 or equivalent plus appropriate skills and knowledge commensurate with the RGR40108 Certificate IV in Racing (Racehorse Trainer). They must also demonstrate English language ability such as, suitable results of a recent academic IELTS - score 5.5 overall with no individual band lower than 5.0, or TOEFL (iBT) 51, or successful completion of TAFE NSW Certificate III in English for Further Study, or proof that the medium of instruction at school has been in English with satisfactory grades in English in final examinations.
