This course is a research degree with a focus on creative practice as a mode of research, and is of equivalent status to a PhD. Twenty-five per cent of the program involves coursework to assist candidates in contextualising their research question and devising appropriate research methodologies by providing study in relevant history, methodology, theory and criticism. The other 75 per cent of the candidate's time is spent in preparation of the thesis. Within the DCA a thesis is understood as having two components: a creative body of work and a written exegesis, which together form complementary responses to a clearly defined research question. Both components are submitted for examination - the exegesis is submitted in printed and bound form - and the creative component may be submitted in printed and bound form, in electronic format, as a film, exhibition, installation, or in another medium. On completion of the DCA the candidate must ensure there is an enduring record of the creative body of work.

Students must have completed Bachelor of Arts (honours, normally first or upper second-class) or equivalent, or master degree with a significant research in creative and/or production component. They must satisfy the English language requirements such as IELTS academic (International English Language Testing System) Writing score of 7.0, Speaking score of 6.0, Reading score of 7.0, Listening score of 6.5, Overall band score of 6.5 and TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) paper based score of 580, Computer based 237, Internet based (25 in each section) score of 100, minimum test of written English (TWE) 4.5, CUTE (Curtin Uni Test of English) - A and CAE (Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English) - Grade B.
