This program is offered in disciplines ranging across art and art history, archaeology and classics, diverse languages and their cultures, English language and literature, ancient, medieval and modern history, philosophy, the global political economy and international governance, sociology and cultural studies, and media and communications.

Students must demonstrate that they possess the necessary academic background in the field of study they wish to pursue. There are three pathways to admission. Pathway I: Students having an undergraduate study with a first class honours degree in a relevant subject area. Pathway II: Student having an undergraduate study with a first class honours degree in a relevant subject area which has been demonstrably achieved. Equivalents comprise: Masters by Research (an applicant having completed a masters degree by research in a relevant subject area with a thesis mark of 80 per cent or above); or Masters by Coursework (an applicant having completed a masters degree by coursework in a relevant subject area by achieving an 80 per cent average or above for the coursework component; and achieving a mark of 80 per cent or above for an independent research component comprising 25 per cent of the requirements for the award of the degree (where the degree is a two semester course)); or publication: certain major publications (e.g. a reviewed book, a suite of peer reviewed articles) may be deemed by the Associate Dean to constitute Hons 1 equivalence on a case-by-case basis. Pathway III: MPhil Upgrade: Applicants achieving an honours class 2 (division one) or equivalent in a relevant subject area may be admitted to the degree of Master of Philosophy (MPhil). The student will have demonstrated a capacity for extended research after completing a minimum of two semesters full-time or equivalent part-time candidature in this degree by: meeting HDR progression requirements; completing 35,000 words of a thesis to the satisfaction of the department; providing evidence that their research is of a sufficient scope and depth to sustain a doctoral thesis. They must satisfy IELTS score of 6.5 (min 6.0 in each band) or TOEFL minimum result of 577 overall including a minimum result of 4.5 in writing or IBT score of 90 (minimum 23 in writing and 22 in reading, listening and speaking).
