The PhD in Jewish Studies is a research only degree. A thesis of 80,000 to 100,000 words (in English) is written on an approved topic under the supervision of a member of staff.

Applicants are normally expected to have completed a Master of Arts (Hons) degree in Jewish Studies or equivalent with an H1 (80-100 per cent) or H2A (75-79 per cent) result. Students who have completed none months or more of research for a Masters degree by thesis only and who are qualified for admission to the PhD program, may apply to be admitted to confirmed PhD candidature. International applicants must fulfill any one of the following English language requirements: IELTS (academic English only) score of 7.0 (written 7.0 with no band less than 6.0); or TOEFL (paper-based test) score of 600 plus TWE 5.0, TOEFL (computer-based test) score of 250 plus 5.0 essay rating and TOEFL (internet-based test) score of 94 (writing 27, speaking 18, reading and listening 13 each); or Pearson Test of English (academic) score of 65 and written communicative skill of 65 and no other communicative skill below 50.
