This is a program of supervised research and study addressing a range of possible fields. The research will lead to the submission of a thesis which makes a significant original contribution to knowledge. This contribution can be in the form of new knowledge or of significant cant and original adaptation, application and interpretation of existing knowledge. The areas of study includes aerospace engineering and technology; agriculture, environmental and related studies; behavioural sciences; biological sciences; building; chemical sciences; civil engineering; earth sciences; electrical and electronic engineering technology; engineering technology; environmental engineering; fisheries studies; human movement; industrial engineering; manufacturing engineering; mechanical and industrial engineering technology; medical studies; nursing; pharmacology; pharmacy; philosophy and religious studies; physics and astronomy; political science and policy studies; process and resource engineering; psychology; public health; sociology; studies in human society; and veterinary studies. Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) qualification is highly regarded in research roles or where highly specialised knowledge is required. It is a prerequisite for a permanent academic position in many universities.

Students considered for admission to candidature for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy has been awarded a masters degree either by research or with a substantial element of research work within it, from a University or any other approved institution; or has qualified for the award of a bachelors degree in an appropriate discipline with first class or second class honours conferred by a University or any other approved institution; holds from an institution of tertiary education, qualifications which are deemed by the board to be equivalent to those prescribed in either of the two dot points listed above. Also students should demonstrate their English language proficiency with IELTS overall band score of 6.5 (with no individual band score less than 6.0) or with a TOEFL paper based score of 600 including a score of 5 or more in the Test of Written English (TWE); or with an internet based overall score of 79 with no writing/speaking score less than 21 and no reading/listening score less than 16.
