This field is oriented towards planning practitioners in developing countries who wish to upgrade their qualifications to include the most recent advancements in the concepts, philosophies, theories and techniques in urban, regional and environmental planning. The program includes a research component which provides students with an opportunity to apply this knowledge to real-life planning issues and problems in their own countries. Academic staff involved in this area have extensive experience in developing countries and courses are oriented towards the needs of developing countries. Many students entering the program are sponsored by their employers who are involved in planning in developing countries. Further professional study provides openings for accelerated advancement and assumption of greater responsibility in the workplace. Graduates of the program usually return to their home countries to take up senior positions in government departments or with aid groups and corporations engaged in fields such as infrastructure, transport, manufacturing, service delivery and urban management.

Students must have completed a bachelor degree from a recognised tertiary institution or post-secondary studies and work experience in the development field. They should also satisfy the English language requirements: IELTS (overall score of 6.5; writing score of 6); TOEFL - (Computer based score of 237; Essay writing score of 4.5); TOEFL - (Paper based score of 570; TWE (Test of written English) score of 5); TOEFL - (Internet Based (IBT) overall score of 90; writing score of 21).

This University was established by an Act of State Parliament on December 10, 1909 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Queensland’s separation from the colony of New South Wales. Its foundation four months later made it the first university in the State and the fifth in the nation. This St Lucia campus is considered by many to be Australia's most attractive. Located seven kilometres from the city's heart on a magnificent 114-hectare site in a bend of the Brisbane River, the campus has expansive landscaped grounds and many playing fields. Its hub is a semi-circle of cloistered buildings enclosing the Great Court, which is on the Queensland Heritage Register as well as the Register of the National Trust of Queensland. The Alumni Teaching Garden in College Road near the river is primarily a teaching and research facility but also includes a quiet area of lush rainforest with public walkways. The adjacent Una Prentice Memorial Garden, bounded by Roberston Walk and Ferry Walk, surrounds two of the three lakes on campus.

This college provide students with individual study bedrooms containing a single bed, desk, chair and storage space for clothing and other belongings. Some College rooms have attached bathrooms (ensuites), but the more usual arrangement is to share the bathroom with other students. Colleges provide educational amenities such as group study rooms, computer labs, printers and photocopiers and tutorials that are in addition to the standard university classes; and recreational facilities such as common rooms, landscaped gardens, gymnasiums, practice courts and music rooms. There are 10 Residential Colleges based on the grounds of the St Lucia campus within easy walking distance of all teaching and research facilities, but they are not owned or managed by the University.
