This course provides training in the principles and techniques of tropical aquaculture with focus on fish, shellfish and pearls. Course highlights: proximity to aquaculture farms for marine shrimps/prawns, freshwater crayfish, pearl oysters, barramundi and aquarium fish; coursework programs are flexible with electives available from other science disciplines and students devise a study program to meet their professional needs in consultation with the course coordinator. Research components may be included under special circumstances. A range of opportunities await graduates in the academia as well as in private and public sectors. Aquaculture technicians, for instance, are involved in freshwater and marine farming, hatchery management and research into farmed species. They can be involved in research, equipment design, site development, and the harvesting, processing and shipment of products. Graduates can also get jobs as research assistants or support staff for teaching. With a PhD, they can gain research positions (Postdoctoral, Fellowships) that are often funded for a few years or apply for permanent positions as a lecturer and researcher.

Students must have completed a Bachelor of Science, from this or another university; or completion of the Graduate Certificate of Science from this university; or other qualifications recognized by the Pro-Vice-Chancellor of the Faculty of Science and Engineering as equivalent. They must also satisfy the following English language requirements: IELTS score of 6.0 (no component lower than 5.5) or TOEFL (paper based) score of 550 (plus minimum Test of Written English score of 4.0) or TOEFL (internet based) score of 79 (minimum writing score of 19) or Pearson (PTE Academic) score of 57.
