This course will suit professionals in full-time employment or those who wish to enroll on a full-time basis. The School of Earth and Environmental Sciences has a world-class reputation in geology, offering courses in General Geology and Economic Geology. JCU provides a comprehensive range of teaching and research opportunities in geological sciences. Current research interests include ore deposits and economic geology; crustal evolution; deformation and tectonics; geochemistry; sedimentary and environments in space and time. Graduates can get jobs as research assistants or support staff for teaching. With a PhD, they can gain research positions (Postdoctoral, Fellowships) that are often funded for a few years, or apply for permanent positions as a lecturer and researcher and mineral exploration studies. Other positions in this field include environmental geologist, field/ exploration geologist, geochemist/ mineralogist/ petrologist, geomorphologist, hydrogeologist/ hydrologist, mathematical geologist, mine site geologist, paleontologist, petroleum geologist, stratigrapher, and structural geologist.

Students must have completed a Bachelor of Science, from this or another university; or completion of the Graduate Certificate of Science from this university; or other qualifications recognized by the Pro-Vice-Chancellor of the Faculty of Science and Engineering as equivalent. They must also satisfy the following English language requirements: IELTS score of 6.0 (no component lower than 5.5) or TOEFL (paper based) score of 550 (plus minimum Test of Written English score of 4.0) or TOEFL (internet based) score of 79 (minimum writing score of 19) or Pearson (PTE Academic) score of 57.
