This course allows students to train in the practical translation of general and technical documents, under the guidance of experienced, qualified professionals. They will also be able to study a broad range of theoretical approaches to translation and be introduced to the history of translation theory in the Western tradition, in addition to professional ethics, comparative cultural studies, and advanced language skills. The third semester of coursework is dedicated to an intensive translation practicum, a project in translation, and related fieldwork. Career opportunities can be found in full-time or freelance translation with national and international agencies, in subtitling, software translation and localization. Translator accreditation also gives graduates a competitive edge in many other professions, such as law, commerce and journalism.

Students must have a bachelor’s degree with a minimum credit (60 per cent) average calculated over the whole degree, from the University of Sydney, including a major in a relevant subject area in the humanities or social sciences, or an equivalent qualification; and a level of competence in a language other than English at a standard acceptable to the Faculty. English language requirements for admission to this course: IELTS: A minimum result of 6.5 overall and a minimum result of 6.0 in each band or TOEFL: A minimum result of 577 overall including a minimum result of 4.5 in Writing or IBT: A minimum result of 90 overall including a minimum result of 22 in Reading, Listening and Speaking and 23 in Writing.
