The program offers high-achieving visual art students the opportunity to experience advanced research in a specialised field of their choice. The degree can be used to enhance professional qualifications toward a career such as art administration, or it can be the beginning of a student's individual research as a professional artist. The program can lead to a career as an artist or teacher, or to work in museums, galleries, community arts programs, art and design consultancies or conservation organisations.

Applicants must have successful completion of an Australian undergraduate degree (or equivalent) in an art and design field. They must submit a folio of 10-15 images of their work for assessment and a detailed proposal outlining the aims, objectives and method of presentation of final submission. Also applicants must demonstrate their English language proficiency with an IELTS minimum overall test score of 6.5. The individual band scores required is 6.0 in reading, listening, writing, and speaking; or with a TOEFL score of 580 in paper-based test with a TWE score of at least 4.5, overall score of 90 in internet-based, at least 22 in writing and no section lower than 20.
