In this course students will complete 24 units of coursework (normally taken as 4 courses of 6 units), and undertake a program of independent, supervised research to produce a thesis (72 units and may take the form of a written thesis or an art administration project, together with supporting written documentation). The length of the thesis may vary but will not normally exceed 30,000 words.

Students should have an appropriate four year Bachelor's degree with Honours from an Australian University that includes a substantial research component, or a qualification or combination of qualifications considered to be equivalent by the appropriate Faculty Higher Degree Committee. In exceptional circumstances, the Higher Degree Committee may consider for admission applicants who do not have qualifications equivalent to a four year honours degree, if sufficient evidence is provided of research experience that clearly demonstrates exceptional research skills and the ability to undertake the proposed research program. They must also satisfy the following English language requirements: IELTS overall score of 6.5 with a minimum score of 6.0 in each of the sub-tests of speaking, listening, reading and writing; TOEFL - Internet-based Test (iBT) overall score of 90 with a minimum score of 24 in writing; TOEFL - Paper-based Test (PBT) overall score of 577 with a minimum score of 5.0 in the Test of Written English (TWE); successful completion of the UNSW Institute of Languages University English Entry Course with a grade of C+ (grade point 7.0) and a minimum score of 20 in the writing component; overall score of 68 in Pearson Test of English academic version and successful completion of the ANU College Access Program with a minimum of 70 per cent overall.
