This program is designed for students to develop advanced skills in carrying out independent and sustained research in English language and literature. The thesis should demonstrate a critical application of specialist knowledge and make an independent contribution to existing scholarship in the area of research. Candidates may advance to the Doctor of Philosophy degree after successful completion of the masters or may apply to convert to the PhD at an earlier stage. Students who complete the masters will: produce a research thesis on a topic of their own choice, and demonstrate capacity for independent research; acquire the ability to mount a sustained scholarly argument; display mastery of scholarship in their chosen field; and gain familiarity with appropriate methods in literary analysis and research.

Applicants must possess a four year BA (Honours) degree with a research component or equivalent in the appropriate area of study or closely related area. The grade for the honours thesis component must be at least equivalent to an H2A (75 per cent) and the overall honours result must be at least equivalent to an H2B (70 per cent). They must also include a thesis proposal of 600 words with their application. The primary basis for selection is academic merit, however, consideration will also be given to the quality of the thesis proposal, research potential, and the availability of an appropriate supervisor. Academic references may be required to assess the applicant's eligibility. International applicants must fulfill any one of the following English language requirements: IELTS (academic English only) score of 7.0 (written 7.0 with no band less than 6.0); or TOEFL (paper-based test) score of 600 plus TWE 5.0, TOEFL (computer-based test) score of 250 plus 5.0 essay rating and TOEFL (internet-based test) score of 94 (writing 27, speaking 18, reading and listening 13 each); or Pearson Test of English (academic) score of 65 and written communicative skill of 65 and no other communicative skill below 50.
