This modern languages program has a strong commitment to research and accepts postgraduates students in French, Italian, Japanese and linguistics. In recent years, linguistics and computer-aided language learning have been focal points of research. Graduates will have a capacity for rigorous and disciplined analysis and have highly-developed attitudes of critical inquiry, creative reflection and openness to cultural difference and diversity. They will be able to adapt to rapidly changing environments in the national and international arena and to adopt new skills and knowledge throughout their careers. Graduates have found employment as policy analysts, researchers in foreign affairs and trade, advisers to politicians, research historians with large companies, journalists, international aid programs, publishing, the diplomatic corps, heritage consultancy, legal services, environmental projects, community development, arts administration and academia.

Students must have obtained either an honours bachelor degree in an appropriate discipline at class II division two or higher or appropriate research subjects in a Master of Arts coursework degree (or equivalent). Candidates who have completed a Bachelor of Arts (pass) degree will need to achieve a credit average or higher in the 24 credit points subject Master of Arts Research methods in order to progress to the research component of the degree. In addition they should have fulfilled English language requirements with IELTS (academic) overall score of 6.5, TOEFL (Internet-based) score of 88 and have credit in English for tertiary studies.
