This program provides applicants who have an appropriate educational background with an opportunity to pursue research at master’s degree level in a specialised area of tourism studies. Participation in this course will develop a candidate’s knowledge of a chosen field and extend that field through a contribution to knowledge. The course comprises training in research methods, development of a research proposal and a research thesis in a specialised area of tourism studies and some coursework units. Student consultation and assessment will allow for a more individual study program to be developed for students from different backgrounds. Areas of tourism studies in which theses can be undertaken include alpine tourism; Australasian tourism studies; convention, events and meetings management; cultural and heritage tourism; urban and regional tourism development; nature-based tourism; tourism impact analysis; and tourism crisis and disaster management.

Students must have a degree or honours degree in tourism, or an honours degree or degree in a cognate area, with at least an average grade of a credit or better and evidence of a capacity for conducting research at the MA level. In addition they should have fulfilled English language requirements with minimum IELTS score of 6.5 (academic) or equivalent.

This University focuses on preparing students for a successful and rewarding career. The 120 hectare (296.4 acres) campus is a haven of clean air, tall trees and native wildlife, including parrots, honey-eaters, cockatoos and resident kangaroos. Despite its serene location, the campus is within walking distance of the shopping and entertainment complex of Belconnen, and just 12 minutes by regular bus service or car from Canberra’s Civic Centre. More than 12,000 students currently attend the University. Some 1600 of them live on campus. They come from local and regional areas, every state and territory in Australia and 90 other countries. Academic standards are high and career results are excellent. The University has produced over sixty five thousand graduates since 1970. Many occupy senior positions in the professions, the corporate world and government enterprises in Australia and their home countries; others are prominent authors, designers, journalists, film-makers and sports men and women.

The University offers a number of accommodation options for future and current students. By living on-campus at the university of Canberra village or arscott house, students will become a member of a diverse and stimulating community. Home to over 1,000 young people from Australia and abroad, they will find that approximately 60 per cent of their residents are female and about 40 per cent of their population come from overseas. Campus living villages manages the on-campus accommodation (excluding arscott house) at the University of Canberra.
