This course provides an opportunity to qualify for higher research degree entry (eg. PhD), while completing a postgraduate course of study at the masters level. Students may select one or more specialisations from: Business application development, Business intelligence, Business systems, Corporate information and knowledge management, Enterprise systems, or Library, archival and recordkeeping systems. The honours program prepares students for doctoral level studies through research methods training and research leading to a minor thesis in business information systems. Students may exit the program after completing four specific units, with a Postgraduate Certificate in Business Information Systems, or after completing eight specific units with a Postgraduate Diploma in Business Information Systems. This highly flexible course structure opens up a variety of career opportunities. Graduates of the program will be expected to play leading professional roles in the field locally and overseas. This specialisation is designed to produce skilled information and knowledge management (IKM) professionals, including information and knowledge managers, information architects, information policy developers, information project managers and information consultants for business and government organisations. It focuses on: strategic IKM information policy, IKM governance, strategy, standards and frameworks; IKM principles; enterprise information architecture and web content management; planning and developing IKM systems to support key business processes; managing information and knowledge resources and services. The goal of the Corporate Information and Knowledge Management specialisation is to prepare students for professional practice in business information, knowledge and content management and appreciate the role of the modern ICT in achieving efficient strategies for managing personal and organisational knowledge. Depending on their qualifications and experience prior to graduate study and the nature of their elective study, graduates could be employed in a variety of roles ranging from entry-level document management analysis through to senior knowledge and information management consulting. In addition to entry-level system information specialist knowledge and skills, and the desirable generic graduate attributes identified by the University, graduates should be able to: analyse the need and requirements for a knowledge management initiative; contribute productively to the development of sustainable IKM organisational strategy; evaluate the sources and potential value of knowledge within an organisation; critically analyse the state and current organisational requirements for recommending appropriate knowledge management solutions; and identify suitable software package or develop components of IKM systems. Graduates of the specialisation will also have a strong theoretical knowledge of information and knowledge management principles that they can apply in designing appropriate technology and policies.

The normal entry requirement is successful completion of a degree that is the equivalent of an Australian bachelors degree in business information systems, information management, or a closely related discipline with an overall credit average for the entire Bachelor degree and with a distinction average in third-year IT units. Completion of a Graduate Diploma or a Post Graduate Diploma in Business Information Systems with a Distinction grade average is considered to be a satisfactory substitute to an Australian Bachelors degree. They must have achieved the following English language proficiency test results: IELTS (minimum test score of 6.5 overall; no individual band less than 6.0); Paper-based TOEFL (minimum test score of 580; a Test of Written English (TWE) score of at least 4.5); Internet-based TOEFL (a score of at least 90 overall; a Writing score of at least 22; no score lower than 20 on the other sections of the test); Cambridge English CAE (A grade); Cambridge English CEP (C grade).
