This program is governed by the Rules for Masters Degrees by Research which provide details regarding all aspects of admission, progression, submission and examination of the thesis. It is a program of supervised research and study leading to the preparation of a thesis. The holder of a research higher degree will have submitted to a thesis which examiners have declared to have provided a contribution to knowledge and demonstrated the candidate's capacity to carry out independent research. The area of study includes communication; communication technologies; and journalism. A higher degree by research is usually required for an academic career or a professional career in research. Many other discipline-specific employment opportunities exist as employers recognise the skills developed through a degree by research program are widely applicable in the workplace.

Students should have completed either one of the following qualifications: holds an honours degree from the University or any other approved institution in a relevant discipline; holds a three year undergraduate degree and a graduate diploma at a high level of academic performance in a relevant discipline; holds a three year undergraduate degree at a high level of academic performance in a relevant discipline, plus a minimum of one year's relevant work experience; holds a three year undergraduate degree with a credit level Grade Point Average (GPA); holds a four year undergraduate degree at a high level of academic performance; holds an alternative qualification deemed by the Panel to be of equivalent scope and standard. Also students should demonstrate their English language proficiency with IELTS overall band score of 6.5 (with no individual band score less than 6.0) or with a TOEFL paper based score of 600 including a score of 5 or more in the Test of Written English (TWE); or with an internet based overall score of 79 with no writing/speaking score less than 21 and no reading/listening score less than 16.
