This program blends the disciplines of mechanical, electrical and software engineering around the principles of control systems and automation, to create and work with systems that have various degrees of automation and computer control, such as robots, automobiles and CNC machines. This program is designed to provide students with a formal qualification in engineering at the masters level. Mechatronic engineers blend the disciplines of mechanical engineering, computing and electronics to create a huge range of products. The course emphasises industry interaction, featuring guest lecturers in the areas of project management, intellectual property, ethics and patenting. In their final year, students undertake an industry design project in which they can apply their technical knowledge and research skills, using state-of-the-art facilities. These projects provide the opportunity to work with companies such as Ford, ABB, ANCA, Invertech, Bosh and BAE Systems.

Applicants must have an undergraduate degree either from the University of Melbourne, another Australian institution, or a university in another country. International applicants must fulfill the following English language requirements: IELTS (academic English only) score of 6.5 (no band less than 6.0); TOEFL (paper-based test) score of 577 plus TWE 4.5; TOEFL (computer-based test) score of 233 plus 4.5 essay rating; TOEFL (internet-based test) score of 79 (writing 21, speaking 18, reading 13 and listening 13); Pearson Test of English (academic) score of 58-64 inclusive and no communicative skill below 50.
