The Master of Fine Arts (Visual Art) is designed for practicing visual artists who have a specific research interest or project they wish to pursue formally within the academic structure and supportive environment of the School of Art. The School of Art seeks to provide opportunities for suitably qualified candidates to develop their potential for, and to conduct, research, to extend their knowledge and competence and, in turn, to contribute to the understanding of current art practice and associated theories of contemporary society and culture.

Applicants must belong to one of the following category: have an honours degree with at least H2A (75 per cent) average, including a major relevant to the stream to which entry is sought, or equivalent; or a relevant undergraduate degree with at least H2A (75 per cent) average and at least two years of documented work experience relevant to the stream to which entry is sought; or an undergraduate degree in any discipline and at least five years of documented work experience relevant to the stream to which entry is sought; or at least five years of documented relevant work experience related to the stream to which entry is sought and demonstrating outstanding artistic ability, together with evidence of ability in academic writing and research or scholarship appropriate for postgraduate study; and performance in one or more of an audition, test, interview, workshop, portfolio or folio presentation, as prescribed by the Academic Board for the stream to which entry is sought. International applicants must fulfill the following English language requirements: IELTS (academic English only) score of 6.5 (no band less than 6.0); TOEFL (paper-based test) score of 577 plus TWE 4.5; TOEFL (computer-based test) score of 233 plus 4.5 essay rating; TOEFL (internet-based test) score of 79 (writing 21, speaking 18, reading 13 and listening 13); Pearson Test of English (academic) score of 58-64 inclusive and no communicative skill below 50.
