This program examines the theory and practice of development in a global context. The program focuses on three linked themes relevant at both the local and global levels: professional practice, sustainable development, and development management. The aim of the course is to produce graduates who combine a critical understanding of relevant development theories with the practical skills required to plan, implement, and monitor development projects successfully. The course is designed and taught by academics who have extensive experience as development practitioners, and who are able to share the knowledge gained from the field in the class room, and make links between the theory and practice of development. The international development course will lead to career in development agencies such as World Vision Australia, Oxfam, TEAR, Save the Children Plan, Australian Red Cross and AUSAID. Graduates will also be able to pursue higher degree research courses at UC and use the course as a pathway to PhD research.

This University focuses on preparing students for a successful and rewarding career. The 120 hectare (296.4 acres) campus is a haven of clean air, tall trees and native wildlife, including parrots, honey-eaters, cockatoos and resident kangaroos. Despite its serene location, the campus is within walking distance of the shopping and entertainment complex of Belconnen, and just 12 minutes by regular bus service or car from Canberra’s Civic Centre. More than 12,000 students currently attend the University. Some 1600 of them live on campus. They come from local and regional areas, every state and territory in Australia and 90 other countries. Academic standards are high and career results are excellent. The University has produced over sixty five thousand graduates since 1970. Many occupy senior positions in the professions, the corporate world and government enterprises in Australia and their home countries; others are prominent authors, designers, journalists, film-makers and sports men and women.

The University offers a number of accommodation options for future and current students. By living on-campus at the university of Canberra village or arscott house, students will become a member of a diverse and stimulating community. Home to over 1,000 young people from Australia and abroad, they will find that approximately 60 per cent of their residents are female and about 40 per cent of their population come from overseas. Campus living villages manages the on-campus accommodation (excluding arscott house) at the University of Canberra.
