This program provides advanced computing knowledge for students who wish to develop their career in the broad field of computing through a thorough understanding of key areas of computer science and software engineering. This program provides engineering graduates with advanced-level technological skills that are in demand in the computing industry. Offering a high level of flexibility, students are able to design their own program drawing on subjects from the specialist streams of Intelligent Systems, Software Engineering and Information Management. These streams focus on understanding and building intelligent software systems, modern software engineering principles and methodologies and database and information retrieval systems and the associated technologies for the management of data. The program is accredited by the Australian Computer Society.

Applicants must belong to the following category: must possess a four year degree with a substantial computing content with an average final year mark of at least 70 per cent (University of Melbourne equivalent); or a four year degree in a related discipline together with considerable industry experience in the field of computing or software engineering; or consideration will also be given to applicants with a three year degree in a computing-related discipline or equivalent and who have completed the Postgraduate Diploma in Science (Computer Science) at the University of Melbourne with a mark of 75 per cent or higher. An applicant's computing background should include solid experience with Unix and C programming as well as a good knowledge of data structures and algorithms for sorting, searching and graph manipulation; software development principles and tools; or software design including object-oriented design. International applicants must fulfill the following English language requirements: IELTS (academic English only) score of 6.5 (no band less than 6.0); TOEFL (paper-based test) score of 577 plus TWE 4.5; TOEFL (computer-based test) score of 233 plus 4.5 essay rating; TOEFL (internet-based test) score of 79 (writing 21, speaking 18, reading 13 and listening 13); Pearson Test of English (academic) score of 58-64 inclusive and no communicative skill below 50.
