In this course, graduates are trained in the necessary skills and practical experience to excel in the industry from high-level specification of telecommunications systems through to realisation of communication circuits. Students undertake specialised subjects and electives of electronic engineering and computer science in the areas of telecommunication and network engineering, as well as a telecommunications project. They can also choose electives to develop an area of interest.

Students must have four-year Australian Bachelor's degree in electronics, telecommunications, or computer engineering, or an Honours degree in science in an appropriate field, or approved international equivalent, with a minimum background in digital logic, computer architecture, mathematics at second year level and basic programming skills in C or C++. They must also satisfy one of the following English language requirements: IELTS (Academic) minimum overall band score of 6.5 with no individual band score less than 6.0 or TOEFL Computer-based Test: a minimum score of 233 with a score of 5 in essay writing or TOEFL Paper-based Test: a minimum score of 575 with a score of 5 or more in the Test of Written English or TOEFL Internet-based Test: a minimum score of 88 with no individual score less than 22 or completion of the English for Further Studies Advanced Stage 5B certificate at PG (postgraduate) level available from the La Trobe University Language Centre or approved equivalent.
