This program deals with the medium of photography as a vital component of contemporary art practice, from the principles of black and white to colour, digital and alternative processes. Students can present work in more traditional formats or take an experimental approach in their work. They develop both conceptual and technical skills to help them understand photography's place in contemporary visual culture and develop confidence in their ability to formulate and implement ideas. The philosophies and working methods of historically significant and contemporary photographers are discussed in depth and students are encouraged to make individual links with issues of theory and practice. Graduating students have moved into a wide variety vocations that cross from visual arts practice through to industry application. This program will help students to develop: applied skills both in studio and marketing the artist/designer in a professional context; skills in producing, presenting and marketing an exhibition, including applying for public grants and private funding; professional recognition of the artist /designer in industry; networking and marketing skills; inspiration for creativity and innovation through intensive studio practice. It aims to develop, for students from a number of undergraduate origins or relevant professions, knowledge and understanding of the major applied and theoretical paradigms relating to their chosen specialisation. It aims to inspire students to develop their abilities to undertake informed and critical analysis, practice and research at postgraduate level.

Students must have completed the Graduate Diploma in Visual Arts and Design (Specialisation). International students must have an International English Language Testing System (IELTS) Academic: Overall 6.5 (with 6.0 in Reading and Writing) obtained within the last two years. Students are required to meet at least one of the English language entry requirements listed. IELTS 6.0, TOEFL PBT 577 with TWE of 4.5, TOEFL iBT 90 with no band less than 20, Cambridge CPE C, Cambridge CAE 58 (no less than Borderline in RW), CELUSA AE4, Pearson PTE Academic Bands below as per the Pearson equivalency table 66 with no communicative score less than 60.

This is a modern, vibrant campus located amidst Adelaide's educational and cultural hub. With innovative learning facilities and a range of research activities across the disciplines, City West also enjoys a reputation as being part of a world-class arts precinct. City West campus has some of the most modern facilities available, including wireless computer network access. Well-equipped classrooms and lecture theatres, a bookshop, cafeteria and a cafe/bar are some of the other facilities available to students. The campus even has its own post office. There is also a gallery, theatre, and courtyards that serve as venues for community arts events. Being just a short walk away from the Adelaide Railway Station, City West is also a major stop on the bus route along North Terrace.

There are a wide range of accommodation options available to students while studying at UniSA, including student apartments, student hostels, homestay, residential colleges and private rental. The residential colleges are located in North Adelaide, within walking distance to the City. They include a single bedroom, fully furnished with a bed, desk, chair, telephone and wardrobe. Access to computers with online access to universities and the internet, a library, music rooms, sporting and laundry facilities, Students also benefit from the pastoral care. Student hostels includes fully furnished single rooms, normally with shared bathroom, kitchen, laundry and recreational areas. Some hostels also have double or triple share rooms. Some student hostels offer special rates for short term stays, subject to availability. Student apartments offer fully furnished options which cater to a wide range of preferences, requirements and budgets. For international students, home stay is a further opportunity to practise the English language skills and learn about the Australian lifestyle. Some students choose homestay just for their first four weeks in Adelaide and look for long term accommodation during this time. While others like to stay long term. Normally full board is provided (own furnished room plus meals). Non-profit housing accommodation options are generally unfurnished. As they operate on a not-for-profit or subsidised basis, availability is limited, eligibility criteria and waiting lists may apply. This free service has been designed to make it easier for UniSA students to find suitable housing. Here students will find a range of accommodation options such as single rooms, share-houses, units, etc.
