This programme aims to provide students a science driven, engineering-oriented education to both science and engineering students. It will be vital to the development of future technological innovations in the following relevant industries and research areas: nanoscience and nanotechnology; information and magnetic storage; photonics and optoelectronics; biomedical materials and biotechnology; semiconductor and organic electronics; quantum information technology. The programme is built on a solid foundation of the basic sciences (in the first year) in which physics is one of the main components. Students from the MSE programme will thus benefit from this double degree programme by being able to delve deeper and broader into the physics disciplines. The programme structure will allow students to acquire knowledge through understanding the interface between the two major leading fields. Graduates will acquire a comprehensive knowledge of physics and a thorough insight into the current Engineering practices of new technologies. It will accept students either through the Faculty of Science (physics track) or the Faculty of Engineering (MSE track).

The Faculty of Engineering’s mission is to nurture Engineer-Leaders with a global perspective and to lead in technology through high-impact research. Established in 1968, the Faculty of Engineering has contributed substantially to the rapid industrial and economic growth of the nation while continuing to contribute to a knowledge-based economy. Professional engineering education started in 1955, with classes held at the Singapore campus of the University of Malaya. Two years later, a four-year diploma course was set up at the Singapore Polytechnic when the Department of Engineering moved to Kuala Lumpur. It became a four-year Bachelor of Engineering course in 1964. The Faculty of Engineering was established in the National University of Singapore (NUS) with the merger in 1980 between the University of Singapore and Nanyang University. The largest of 14 faculties and schools at NUS, the Faculty has grown from 300 students in the late 1970s to close to 10,000 strong today. Today, they are a vibrant community with 10 departments, divisions and programme. The Faculty also offers part-time undergraduate courses for polytechnic graduates and working professionals leading to the Bachelor of Technology. With an increasing international student and staff population, the Faculty has developed into a truly cosmopolitan environment for tertiary education, emphasizing both fundamentals and applications.
