The purpose of the course is to teach dental students to recognize and diagnose the major medical diseases of the main system of the body. Emphasis will be given to three aspects: medical conditions that affect the oral cavity or dental procedures and vice versa; recognition of the sick outpatient eg patient with dyspnoea, cyanosis etc; emergency medicine. Students are expected to be competent in cardiopulmonary resuscitation, diagnosis and management of medical emergencies including unconsciousness, allergic reactions, seizures, angina and cardiac arrest. At the end of the course there will be an Examination in Medicine to evaluate students on patients and clinical material in common medical conditions, with particular reference to their studies.

Applicants who apply as 'A' Level applicant H2 pass in Chemistry and H2 pass in either Biology or Physics. IB Diploma applicant must have a pass in HL Chemistry and pass in either HL Biology or Physics. NUS High School Diploma applicant must have completed a mMajor CAP of at least 2.0 in Chemistry and either Biology or Physics, CAP of at least 1.0 in one other major and in English Programme and Research Project. Polytechnic applicant must hold an approved diploma from a polytechnic in Singapore. Applicants must fulfill any of the following English language requirements with a minimum acceptable score: IELTS 6.5, MUET 200, C6 in 'O' level English and EL1119; or TOEFL with score of 580 for paper-based, 237 for computer-based and 92-93 for internet-based.
