Freshmen who are offered direct entry into the double degree programme are deemed to be provisionally enrolled. Provisionally enrolled students will be required to fulfill the stipulated double degree requirements by the end of their year 2, failing which they will be taken off the double degree programme. Therefore, direct entry into the double degree programme does not guarantee that enrolment as a double degree student for the duration of the studies at SMU. Freshmen who are not offered direct entry into the double degree programme may still enroll as single degree students and will be eligible to apply for the double degree programme in their second year if they have done well in their first year. International students must fulfill the following English language requirements (minimum scores): TOEFL score of 550 (paper-based), 213 (computer-based), 79 - 80 (internet-based) or an IELTS overall band score of 6.5 and with Malaysian University English Test (MUET): overall band of at least 5.

The mission of the School of Economics is to accelerate the growth of SMU by creating a world-class center of research and teaching in economics. Economic research forms a key factor in the development of Singapore Management University as a foremost academic institution in ‘generating cutting-edge research with global impact and producing broad-based, creative and entrepreneurial leaders for the knowledge-based economy’. Economic theory and analysis underlie many of the major business disciplines. For example, Introductory Economics is a foundation course in the curriculum of both the Business and Accountancy Schools at SMU. International Economics is a compulsory course for BBM students; and economic theory and econometrics are building blocks for the study of finance. Many sub-disciplines in economics provide the foundations for business and management area studies like consumer behavior, decision sciences, marketing and organizational behavior.

The Singapore Management University has the following hostel facilities: SMU Residences at Prinsep and Accommodation at Havelock. The SMU Residences at Prinsep Street is open to fresh undergraduates uprooted from their home towns, to get used to life in SMU and in Singapore. The residence is in close proximity to Little India, Arab Street, Bugis Junction and the National Library. The hostel is surrounded by museums, theatres, educational institutions, art galleries, cafes, restaurants and a range of retail outlets. The residence consists of three blocks of four-storey apartments in a tropical setting with landscaping and abundant foliage. There are a total of 48 individual apartments. Each has a lounge cum dinning area, equipped with refrigerator and microwave oven, two toilets cum shower and four bedrooms with multi-split air conditioning (two single and two twin sharing bed) which can accommodate up to six residents. Rooms are furnished with a loft bed/study table, wardrobe, towel rail study chairs, waste bins and mattress. Rooms are also equipped with power points, LAN points and circular PL lamps. SMU has recently leased 220 beds of student hostels at Havelock Road from EM Services Pte Ltd (a private hostel operator) and it is open to senior undergraduate students (full-time SMU students second year and above), exchange students and full time post graduate students who plans to study full time at SMU for the forthcoming semester. There are 56 apartments which consist of a common lounge on the 15th floor. Each apartment has a living room (approx.16.68sqm) with a dining table; a kitchen (approx. 3.6sqm) equipped with refrigerator, microwave oven, kettle, electrical hot plate for simple cooking; a toilet cum shower and two bedrooms (approx. 12.95sqm) with air conditioning, two single beds, mattresses, study tables/chairs and wardrobe. The apartment is fully equipped with power points and wireless internet connection.
