This program will primarily equip ‘O’ level school leavers with the vital knowledge, practical skills and positive attitudes necessary to become competent early childhood educators. Students will gain a broad-based understanding of the principles and practices of early childhood education and care. At the same time, you will learn to design and deliver creative and dynamic child-centered lessons in various subject areas, ranging from literacy, mathematics to creative expressions. Graduates from this course can work as early childhood educators or work in children-related industries.

Students must present a portfolio showing evidence of interest in the profession and attend a selection interview to assess the suitability for the course. They should meet the minimum entry requirements of English Language (EL1) grades 1-6 and any four other subjects, excluding CCA grades 1-6. New pre-school teachers are required to obtain a minimum of B4 in their GCE ‘O’ level English (EL1) or a minimum band of 6.5 in the IELTS - General Training. Applicants who do not meet this requirement are required to ensure that they do so within two years of their registration as pre-school teachers, either through re-sitting their GCE ‘O’ level English or taking the IELTS - General Training examination. Applicants must have a minimum of 5 GCE ‘O’ level credits, excluding CCA (i.e. grade 1 - 6 for at least 5 different subjects, including English). They must have obtained a minimum of D7 in elementary or additional mathematics. All applicants will also be required to pass a medical examination and be free from physical handicap. Whilst not comprehensive, the following medical conditions may lead to non-acceptance into the Diploma in Early Childhood Studies: active tuberculosis, hbsag positive / hepatitis b carrier, acquired immune deficiency syndrome (aids), uncontrolled epilepsy, psychiatric condition, uncontrolled asthma, uncontrolled hypertension, uncontrolled diabetes, legal blindness, profound deafness, Mobility restricted, Physical dependence upon mobility equipment. Applicants with foreign qualifications applying must ensure that the medium of instruction for their formal education is English and they must have met the minimum English language requirements of grade 6 for the relevant English language subject (e.g. Bahasa Inggeris) or a minimum band of 6.5 in the International English Language Testing System (IELTS – General Training).
