This programme equips students with a strong understanding of the properties and fundamentals of materials. They emphasize the application of knowledge and the innovation of high performance products demanded by industry via the learning of processing, testing and characterisation of materials. Materials Science is the study of the relationship between the structures and properties of materials. The structure of materials is studied at various levels, from the smallest atoms and molecules, to the big crystals and polymers. With the knowledge of the properties of these structures, students can then manipulate the materials to suit the usage they want. Students will learn to manipulate the structures and properties of materials at the atomic or molecular, crystalline, microscopic and macroscopic levels using advanced characterisation equipment and processing techniques. They will also have an opportunity to make new materials for new areas of industrial as well as domestic applications. This programme is an exciting, innovative and multi-disciplinary field that forms the basis for cutting-edge technologies such as nanotechnology and advanced materials. It is one of the most important driving forces of technological advances in this century and encompasses a wide spectrum of materials, including polymers, metals, ceramics, electronics materials, composites and biomaterials. This programme equips students with a strong understanding of the properties and fundamentals of materials. They emphasise the application of knowledge and the innovation of high performance products demanded by industry via the learning of processing, testing and characterisation of materials. This specialisation option offers students the opportunity to learn about semiconductors and the associated processes that this industry is built upon. Those taking up this specialisation will have many options after graduation, whether they decide to join the workforce or further their studies.

GEC 'O' level holders students to be eligible for admission for the course, must obtain 26 points or better for the net ELR2B2 aggregate score (i.e. English language, two relevant subjects and best two other subjects, including CCA Bonus Points). They should also meet the entry requirements of English language with the grade 1-7, mathematics (elementary or additional) with grade 1-6 and one of the subjects with grade 1-6 in science stream, design and technology, food and nutrition, engineering, electronics or computer science stream. Students who are ITE holders should have completed NITEC qualification or Higher NITEC qualification with a GPA greater than or equal to 3.5 or 2.0 respectively. In addition to this all international students should have secured minimum IELTS score of 6.0 for all bands (listening, writing, reading and speaking) or Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) with a minimum score of 650 (Paper- based), 173 (Computer-based) or 79 (internet-based).
