In this course, students will learn to perform biochemical and microbial tests, identification of growth patterns of micro-organisms and counting and maintenance of microbes/microbial cultures. Higher Nitec in Biotechnology graduates are well suited for employment in a research and development department or quality control laboratory in the medical technology, biotechnology or healthcare services sector. Their roles include performing a wide range of laboratory procedures and technical functions to support researchers or analysts with research, development, analysis and testing activities. Some of the job titles held by graduates include Biotech Laboratory Technician and Biotech Laboratory Assistant. There are excellent opportunities for career advancement to supervisory positions and beyond in the life science industry. The challenge is for students to upgrade their technical skills and knowledge by taking up higher-level courses.

Students must have completed GCE 'O' level passes in English language (grade 1-8), mathematics (grade 1-7 elementary or additional) and one approved science subject (grade 1-8) or GCE 'N(A)' level passes with grade 1-4 in English language and mathematics and three other subjects (grade 1-5).
