This programme provides students to maximise equipment uptime and minimise maintenance and operating costs, and these are the two main advantages of adopting such systems. The research in this area involves the use of hybrid approaches to solve problems found in complex mechanical and electrical systems; and new algorithms are being developed. The School also conducts research on new technologies for sensing, feature extraction and selection. Other research areas include sensors and sensing systems, signal processing and data mining, intelligent decision making, artificial intelligence, etc. Knowledge-based intelligent systems such as intelligent machines and robots have emerged as significantly important technologies that make an impact on both military and commercial applications. Students are also required to attend classes and pass the examinations to earn at least nine AU (for example three three-AU courses) in MEng study. Upon the completion of the research, the student is required to submit a thesis on their research for examination.

Applicant should have completed a bachelor's degree with honours of at least a second class upper level or equivalent or a master's degree (research-based) from a reputable university. For international applicants whose mother tongue is not English, a TOEFL score of greater than or equal to 570 (paper-based)/greater than or equal to 230 (computer-based)/greater than or equal to 88 (internet-based) is required and a minimum of IELTS score of 6.0 is required to replace TOEFL. They are also required to have a GRE score of greater than or equal to 1200/3.5. Applicants from India may use the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) score of at least 90 per cent in place of GRE.
